A Florida teen, Brendan Depa, has pleaded guilty to beating a teacher unconscious after his Nintendo Switch was confiscated. The incident occurred in February 2023, when Depa, who was 17 at the time, threw Joan Naydich, a paraprofessional at Matanzas High School, to the ground and kicked her in the back and head over a dozen times. The attack was caught on surveillance footage and went viral.
Depa, who is reportedly autistic, appeared in court and pleaded guilty to a first-degree felony charge of aggravated battery. He now faces up to 30 years in prison, with his sentence to be determined in a hearing in January 2024 by Judge Terrence Perkins.
Originally charged as a juvenile, Depa is now being held on a $1 million bond. The incident began when Naydich questioned Depa about playing video games in class, and he responded by calling her expletives. He then attacked her after she headed for the dean’s office. However, it was later reported that the victim did not confiscate Depa’s Nintendo Switch, as initially claimed.
Depa’s attorney is seeking juvenile sanctions for his client, considering he was 17 at the time of the offense. However, the high school teacher who was beaten unconscious is reportedly refusing to help the defense lighten the sentence for the teen. Naydich is expected to testify at Depa’s sentencing.
The reason behind the teacher confiscating the Nintendo Switch from the teen was that he was playing video games in class, which was against the school’s rules. The incident took place at Matanzas High School in Palm Coast, Florida, on February 21, 2023.
The 17-year-old student, Brendan Depa, became irate when a female teacher’s assistant took his Nintendo Switch away during class. This led to a violent altercation where Depa brutally assaulted the faculty member, Joan Naydich, causing her to be hospitalized for her injuries. The attack was captured on CCTV cameras and the footage went viral on social media.
