Manchester Tram Derails Near City Centre, Causing Commuter Chaos

Commuters in Manchester faced severe disruptions on Friday morning after a tram derailed near Cornbrook station in the city centre. The incident brought busy commuter services to a standstill, leaving passengers stranded and confused.

The derailment occurred at approximately 8:40 am, with the tram coming off the tracks just 50 feet from Cornbrook station. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and the incident was described as minor.

Widespread Disruptions

The impact of the derailment was felt across the Metrolink network. Multiple lines experienced significant delays, with the Altrincham line also suffering from a communications fault, adding to the travel woes.

Departure boards at Cornbrook station were blank, leaving commuters uncertain about their travel plans. The Bee Network, which operates the Metrolink, confirmed that there was no service between Deansgate Castlefield and Old Trafford, Firswood, Media City, and Wharfside.

Passenger Impact

Passengers took to social media to express their frustration and share their experiences. One unlucky commuter, who wished to remain anonymous, shared pictures of the scene, showing passengers disembarking onto the tracks.

“I was on my way to work when the tram suddenly derailed,” they said. “We were all shocked but grateful that no one was hurt. It’s been a very stressful morning, and I’m not sure when I’ll be able to get to work now.”

Alternative Transport Arrangements

The Bee Network urged commuters to use alternative public transport options and provided ticket acceptance on bus services. Bus replacements were arranged for various routes, including Eccles to Media City, East Didsbury to Firswood, and Airport to Firswood.

Ongoing Investigation

Transport bosses are working to resolve the issue and reopen the line as soon as possible. However, no timeframe has been provided for when normal services will resume.

“We are currently working hard to get the tram back on the tracks and resume services,” said a Bee Network spokesperson. “We understand the inconvenience this has caused to our passengers and ask for their patience during this time.”

As the investigation into the cause of the derailment continues, commuters are advised to check the Bee Network’s website and social media channels for the latest updates and travel information.
