Moo Duk Kwan

Federation is the owner of a trademark covering the name Moo Duk Kwan. This trademark covers only the Mooduk Kwan logo. It does not include its general terms and logos for splinter groups. The Moo Duk Kwan organization has taken legal action against trademark infringers in the U.S., including a recent victory that resulted in a $115,560 judgment and a permanent injunction.

Moo Duk Kwan was established by Grandmaster Hwang Kee, who passed away peacefully in 2002. His son, Hwang Hyun Choul, is the current head for the Moo Duk Kwan organisation. His legacy has impacted martial arts worldwide.

Moo Duk Kwan has been around since the 1970s. This organization teaches traditional Korean martial art, called Soo Bahk Do. This system also draws upon the influences of both northern and south Chinese. Moo Duk Kwan schools are often affiliated with the Tang Soo Do organization.

There are three major branches of Moo Duk Kwan. Soo Bahk Do people follow Hwang Hyun Chul’s linesage, while Tae Kwon Do people align with Kukkiwon. Tang Soo Do people adhere to the original forms of Pyung Ahn.

Hwang Kee was the founder of Moo Duk Kwan. He was born during Japan’s occupation of Korea. His parents were Yi Dynasty scholars. Hwang Kee’s school was first located on Mountain Avenue, and later relocated to 20 Millburn Avenue. He was also instrumental in the founding of the U.S. Soo Bahk Dor Federation.

After the Korean War, there were many martial arts schools in Korea. These schools were called “kwans”. Some of them formed their own organizations, while others broke away. Others tried to replicate Grandmaster Hwang Kee’s Dan Bon system.

Moo Duk Kwan was originally named Hwa Soo Do before being combined with Tang Soo Do. Hwang Kee’s efforts eventually paid off and the Moo Duk Kwan was presented to U.S. military personnel in 1957. By the end of the decade, the art had spread to five U.S. bases.

Kee’s efforts for the promotion of the Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan was interrupted by the Korean War. But he returned home to Seoul and leased a space commercially for his school, Joong Ang Do. In 1955, there were ten gymnasiums and the Moo Duk Kwan had a central Gymnasium close to Seoul Station. Its students included police officers and military personnel.

Hwang Kee developed Moo Duk Kwan in Korea in the 1940s. It is a composite martial art based on the Chinese and Japanese traditions. Its name means “the way of the Chinese hand.” The Korean version is called “Tang Soo Do” and is the Korean pronunciation to To-te.

There are also splits within the organisation. Students who earn their blackbelts at one school do not automatically get recognized at the other school.

The Poromas style consists 31 moves. To move up to the next level, it’s important to learn the entire form. During the Poomsae form, students are required to engage in sparring. Students must compete in sparring competitions to be promoted to the next rank.

Originally called t’aekwon do, the name Taekwondo is derived from the ancient Korean t’aekwon. The Korean art has evolved through Chinese as well as Japanese techniques. Although it was founded in ancient times it was only officially recognized in the middle-19th century. General Hong Hi Choi initiated a movement to unite all Korean martial arts styles. He proposed the name “Taekwondo” to a committee, and it was officially recognized in 1955.
